A proper online piano teaching setup

Not just a laptop on a chair

One of the most common questions about online piano lessons is whether they can be as effective as in-person lessons. My answer is simple: the teaching does not change, but the medium is different. So the setup matters.

For that reason, I have built my online lessons around a multi-camera and software setup designed specifically for piano teaching. Students can see me clearly when we are talking, but they can also see detailed views of the keyboard, hand movement, arm movement, and pedal use.

The setup also allows me to show which keys I am playing, annotate sheet music directly on screen, zoom in when needed, and use visual tools for theory, chords, scales, intervals, and musical explanation.

The aim is to make the online lesson as clear and practical as possible, so the focus remains on the music, the student, and the work we are doing together.

Online piano lessons that feel personal, clear, and structured

Learning piano online can work very well when the lessons are carefully structured and the setup is clear. Students are able to learn from home, on their own instrument, while still receiving live guidance, demonstrations, corrections, and regular feedback.

For many learners, especially adults and teenagers, online lessons remove one significant obstacle: travel. Instead of fitting a lesson around traffic, parking, or a busy family schedule, you can sit at the piano at home and focus fully on the music.

My online lessons are live and one-to-one, and each lesson is adapted to the student’s level, goals, musical interests, and pace of learning.

Who are online piano lessons suitable for?

Online piano lessons suit a wide range of students: they are often a good fit for adults, teenagers, returning players, exam students, and learners who do not have easy access to the right teacher locally.

Adult beginners
Many adults worry that they are starting too late, but online lessons can be a comfortable way to begin. You can learn from home, at your own instrument, with clear step-by-step guidance and without the pressure of travelling to a lesson.

Returning players
If you learned piano years ago and want to return to it, online lessons can help you rebuild confidence, refresh technique, and choose music that suits your current level and goals.

Teenagers and exam students
Online lessons can work well for teenagers who are comfortable with technology and able to practice regularly. Lessons can include repertoire, technique, sight-reading, theory, practice planning, and exam preparation where appropriate.

Intermediate players
For students who already play, online lessons can focus on musical detail, technique, interpretation, jazz harmony, improvisation, reading skills, or specific pieces you want to improve.

Students outside Cork
If you are not based in Cork, online lessons allow you to study with a Cork-based piano teacher without travel. This can be especially useful for students in smaller towns or rural areas where the right teacher may not be nearby.

How online piano lessons work

Online piano lessons take place live by video call. Before the first lesson, I can help you check the best position for your phone, tablet, or laptop so that I can see the keyboard and your hands clearly.

During the lesson, we work much like we would in person: technique, reading, rhythm, repertoire, musical understanding, theory, and practice habits. I can demonstrate at my own piano, listen to you play, give corrections in real time, and use screen sharing or visual tools when helpful.

After the lesson, you will know what to practise and how to approach it. The aim is to keep lessons clear, structured, and practical, so you are not left guessing between sessions.

You do not need a professional studio at home. A piano or suitable keyboard, a stable internet connection, and a laptop are usually enough to begin. I can also advise you on the best camera angle and setup before your first lesson.

What you need:

  • Piano or suitable keyboard

  • A laptop

  • Stable internet connection

  • Quiet space

The practical benefits of learning piano online

Online lessons are not only convenient. For many students, they remove the practical barriers that make regular piano study difficult. When the setup is clear and the lessons are structured, learning from home can be focused, flexible, and surprisingly natural.

What online students say

Some students start online lessons because they live outside Cork, while others choose them for convenience, flexibility, or continuity. Here are a few comments from students and parents who have experienced online lessons.

I am now reading piano sheet music and playing new pieces and I have Emiliano to thank for this. I was worried as to how the online class would go but it’s been really easy to adapt to.

Anne Finn

Emiliano is a great teacher. I am a primary teacher and I attend piano lessons with Emiliano now and again when I need a hand with some pieces for school. If I send him an audio he will write a score. I have had lessons face to face and through zoom. I couldn’t recommend him enough. 5 stars!

Kathleen

I’ve known Emiliano for years and I couldn’t wait for my son to be old enough to start having piano lessons with him. Christopher started in May last year zoom lessons and it is amazing how much he has learned thanks to Emiliano.

Anna

Coming back to music as a mature student Emiliano has given me confidence and encouragement the whole way. His teaching ability is second to none. I thoroughly enjoy his class either at his home or on zoom.

Monica

I have been doing lessons with Emiliano for a year now,and I think he is a FANTASTIC teacher. He is extremely thorough,he listens to my questions, explains clearly and is very patient! He is EXTREMELY talented as a player. And he uses computer apps to explain situations FLAWLESSLY! He is extremely capable and is the best piano teacher I have had (I’ve had 4 previously). I highly recommend him! (39 year old student).
