Welcome back to my theory kitchen! Today, we are diving into a fundamental skill for music theory exams: mastering key signatures and tonic triads. Understanding the relationship between these two elements is essential for accurately identifying keys and building stable harmonies.

From the Archives: I shot this lesson back when my studio was just starting out in my old apartment. Looking back at that small kitchen and living area reminds me of how far the studio has come, but the theory remains exactly the same: once you identify the root, the rest of the triad stems up from it.

Lesson Roadmap & Key Concepts

In this tutorial, we work through common exam-style questions involving key signatures and tonic triads. Here are the key moments to help you navigate the lesson:

  • [00:00:38] – Identifying the Clef: How to determine if a triad belongs in the treble or bass clef based on its root note.
  • [00:03:33] – The Sharp Key Trick: Using the leading note to find exactly which sharps belong in your signature.
  • [00:05:15] – Minor Key Relationships: Finding the relative major to unlock the correct key signature for minor triads.
  • [00:07:45] – The Flat Key Rule: Remembering the “penultimate flat” shortcut for keys like E-flat major.
  • [00:10:15] – Final Review: A step-by-step walkthrough of B minor and the Circle of Fifths logic.

Step-by-Step Problem Solving

To master key signatures and tonic triads, follow this three-step checklist:

  1. Determine the Clef: Look at the bottom note. In which clef does that specific position match the named root of the key?
  2. Find the Major/Minor Relationship: If it’s a minor key, go up a minor third to find its relative major.
  3. Apply the Signature: Count your sharps or flats using the Circle of Fifths or the “Leading Note” method shown in the video.
